Sustainability and Skerries Mills

Skerries Mills is committed to having a positive impact on the future and to providing our visitors with a quality experience where they feel assured of a positive environmental and social impact. This applies across the range of activities offered at Skerries Mills, a destination where visitors can learn about the power of wind and water, as harnessed to generate power by our ancestors and the sustainable living practises that came so naturally in the past.

We are conscious of the legislative commitment Ireland has to be more biodiversity rich by 2050, and to doing our small part. In so doing, we are creating spaces that enable reflection and a pleasant environment that promotes well-being.

The site is also used for the growing of crops which are harvested around our Harvest Time Festival, and as this supports local farmers, we aim to support many local groups, from Sustainable Skerries to Tidy Towns.

Skerries Community Garden is located at Skerries Mills, all are welcome to stroll in or sit and relax in this much-loved space. The community garden committee and group have developed a space that is carefully curated to benefit biodiversity.

A broad selection of native herbs are grown in the garden for use in our Watermill Café.

The Farmer’s Market at Skerries Mills is a welcome opportunity for local food producers to sell directly to households, delivering fresh, locally sourced food, ranging from eggs, Jams, juices, and breads to farm-to-folk meats. Local crafters also sell a range of homemade gifts at this weekly market.

Skerries Mills has the pleasure of working with Sustainable Skerries, who, as part of a collaborative network in the town, brought home the award for Ireland’s Greenest Town 2025, in the Irish Times Greenest Places Awards. The celebration of this acclamation for all volunteers was held in Skerries Mills, which has also served as a venue for Skerries Eco Festival.

We are keen to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. Material from damaged sail mills has been given a second life in the form of a range of candle holders, keyrings and more by the carpenter working on some of the restoration and repair projects.
